The Port of Vigo is undoubtedly one of the most important organizations in the Autonomous Community, both economically as rendering services. Nevertheless, port activities are not unrelated to their interaction with the environment and hence, every possible measure to minimise their possible impact should be taken.
the port authority of Vigo, as port manager, sets as a priority within its strategic framework, the objective of developing a sustainable port management, linking the port’s social and economical development to environmental protection and assuming the defence of the environment in the ría de vigo in its whole dimension through :
“Clean” traffics.
Impact studies in all the works.
Rigorous control of every concession.
Training and sensitisation of the port community.
Regeneration of damaged aresaadados.
Therefore, an environmental management system has been developed, which, not only integrates the environment in every activity carried out by the Port Authority, but also regards strict respect for the environment in all the Port activities as a must. The Port Authority of Vigo, in its competence field, assumes the following compromises:

To integrate environmental concerns in the processes of zoning, planning and port's public domain management, harmonising resources and necessities.

To operate within the frame of fulfilment of the applicable legal requirements, as well as the environmental accords voluntarily agreed with third parties.

To apply measures in order to carry out any operation or activity in the port areas with the appropriate means to avoid, prevent or minimise pollution.

To assign human, technical and financial means to optimise the environmental management system and boost an improvement of the environmental performance of the port community through the best techniques in disposal, so that activities and citizen and natural environment are compatible.

To gather and answer communications related to the Port’s environmental management.

To improve, from an Environmental point of view, the environment adscript to the Port Authority of Vigo, rehabilitating littoral areas damaged by extinct concessions (Law 48/2003 on the economic regime and the provision of services in ports of general interes - Article 125).

| 7. |
To involve the port authority’s staff, as well as those from port concessions, from companies rendering port services and Port users in the respect for the environment, offering adequate information and training.
|
| 8. |
To cooperate with Port companies and Public Administrations to prevent and fight pollution in port areas.
|
| 9. |
To promote research and studies related to the protection of the environment and to collaborate in this line with other organisations and companies according to their competences.
